The work I do: I am a University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University and director of the Center for the Study of Curriculum Policy. I received an A.B. in mathematics from Concordia College in River Forrest, IL and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in psychometrics and applied statistics. At Michigan State University, I hold faculty appointments in Statistics and Education. I previously served as National Research Coordinator and Executive Director of the US National Center which oversaw participation of the United States in the IEA sponsored Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

I have published in numerous journals including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Education Researcher, Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, American Affairs Journal, Journal of Educational Statistics, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Journal of Curriculum Studies, and the Journal of Educational Measurement. Additionally, I have co-authored eleven books including Why Schools Matter, Inequality for All, and Schooling Across the Globe: What We Have Learned From Sixty Years of Mathematics and Science International Assessments. My current research interests focus on the effects of curriculum on academic achievement. I am also concerned with educational policy related to mathematics, science and testing in general.

My connection to the work of Student Achievement Partners: The relationship started as Student Achievement Partners started its original work toward the development of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. My research contributed to that work and I have been involved with them for many years since, supporting their work towards making mathematics accessible to all.

The perspective I bring: I continue my research on mathematics especially pertaining to K-12 schooling. Also my continuing involvement with OECD in the planning and development of the next major PISA assessment in 2023.
