Professional Development: Introduction to Literacy Shifts in Content Areas
Overview: The Introduction to Literacy Shifts in Content Areas Module is a 1-4 hour module that provides you with an introduction to the key shifts required by the CCSS for Literacy in the content areas: history / social studies, science, and technical subjects.
How to Get Started: You are encouraged to complete any or all portions of this module to meet your needs, or the needs of your audience if you are facilitating this module for professional development. Be sure to read the User's Guide first! You can find it below the PowerPoint presentation.
The User's Guide is a detailed guide for you, the self learner and/or facilitator. The guide includes a summary of the contents of the module, followed by suggestions for using the module—whether you have 1 hour or 4 hours. There is a summary of each of the activities and full references/links for all papers, videos, and other web resources.

The presentation provides participants with an overview of the key instructional shifts required by the CCSS for English Language Arts and Literacy. This presentation explains the 3 literacy shifts, the research and rationale for each shift, and their impact on instruction in content area classrooms. Reflection: Processing the Shifts
This discussion is designed to provide you with an opportunity to reflect upon each of the key shifts, and it's implications for instruction. You will read the shifts from the Description of ELA / Literacy Shifts handout, and record your thoughts on the Processing the Shifts handout.
Activity: Naming the Standards
You will closely read and name the ELA and Literacy Anchor Standards with a 1–5 word phrase, thus providing you with an opportunity to become familiar with the content of the standards. You will record your work on the Name the Standards handout. Beging with the Reading strand, and continue with the Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language strands as time permits. The answer key for the activity is available using the "Download All" option above.
