The election for class president of the 5th grade shapes up as a two-way race between Cricket and Lucas, but throughout the course of the story, the students begin to recognize Lucas's friend Julio as a leader, showing the qualities that a class president should have. In the end, the students elect Julio as the class president because of his ability to think about others rather than just himself. (McGraw-Hill Open Court, 2002)
