This story is based upon the life of Arizona Houston Hughes, a teacher who taught generations of children in a one-room schoolhouse that she herself had attended.  The story begins with her birth in a log cabin her father built, and chronicles her life growing up in a small rural town. She returned to her village and taught where she first started as a student.  Her career spanned fifty -seven years, reaching several generations of students including the author.
