This lesson focuses on 8.EE.8.c and 8.EE.8.a: solving problems leading to simultaneous equations and understanding that points of intersection on a graph indicated solutions. Students work in small groups to determine which movie rental/streaming company offers the best deal for movie watching. Students consider the information given and find ways to prove their thinking. Core Actions 2 and 3 are strongly exhibited in this lesson.
Introduction to Simultaneous Linear Equations (Redd)Download
1B: In this part of the lesson, the teacher discusses previous learning with her students. They have been working on linear equations and solutions (one, none, or infinitely many). Then she relates it to the work they will be doing today, which is looking at simultaneous equations and finding a point of intersection.
3A: In this part of the lesson, the teacher is checking student understanding by asking questions that get students to share their thinking. She guides the students in understanding what the problem is asking and making sense of the mathematics involved in solving it.
2D: In this part of the lesson, the teacher is checking for student understanding. She walks around to the different groups of students and asks questions in order to gather evidence of understanding. Students explain how they solved the problem.
2C: In this part of the lesson, students are sharing their solution methods. Some students used equations, some substituted values for x, one group created a table, and one group created a graph in which two lines intersect. Students talk about each other's ideas and strategies.
3C: In this video clip, students are explaining their thinking. The teacher is engaging with the students and facilitating a discussion among the small group, where the students take over the conversation and continue talking after the teacher has walked away.
2B: Almost the entire lesson period involves students working with grade level problems. This is a short clip where students are observed engaging with the problem and discussing and trying strategies to prove which movie rental/streaming company is the best deal.
3F: This clip shows a student explaining how they solved the problem using a table. The students in the group chose to use a table as a tool to organize their data. The table helped them make sense of the data and make a statement to prove their answer.
