How can we design inclusive literacy classrooms that foster trust and community?

In this Coffee & Conversation, Dr. Sarajaneé Davis talks about creating meaningfully inclusive literacy classrooms. She shares strategies for understanding how teacher identity impacts student learning experiences, analyzing text for bias, and soliciting student feedback. She also discusses how to process student feedback in ways that are productive and beneficial to building trust and community in the classroom.

Dr. Sarajaneé Davis is the Educator Programs Coordinator at we are and a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Public Policy Department at UNC-Chapel Hill. She began her career as an educator teaching at the high school and elementary levels in Florida and North Carolina. As the Educator Programs Coordinator, Sarajaneé supports educators and schools aiming to foster anti-racism in their pedagogy and practices. In both of her current positions she uses historical narratives to explore the choices that created and perpetuate the status quo. The unifying goal in her work is to amplify Black historical perspectives in order to create an equitable future.
