Two men are handcuffed together board a train. Miss Fairchild, a young and elegant woman, recognizes the younger of the two men, Mr. Easton, and reintroduces herself to him. She then notices that the two men are handcuffed to each other. The older man explains that he is being taken prison by Mr. Easton, the marshal. Miss Fairchild, continues chatting with Mr. Easton. After they leave, a passenger who overheard the conversation reveals that Mr. Easton is actually the prisoner and the other man is the marshal. (Holt Elements of Literature, 2008)
