About this Lesson

 In this lesson, kindergarten students experience a read aloud of a narrative nonfiction text about how roads are built. The teacher first completes an unencumbered first read aloud of the anchor text. Students then listen to the text a second time, pausing to discuss text-dependent questions about the machines needed to complete construction of a new road in partnerships and as a whole class. Finally, students engage in a text-based drawing prompt with writing support from the teacher. The anchor text used in this lesson is “Roadwork” by Sally Sutton. It is included as a Literature Big Book in the Wonders curriculum used by this teacher.
