“One of the most consistent findings in all of education research is that children become better readers when they get explicit and systematic phonics instruction.” We know from both research and what we see every day with our students, that foundational skills allow students to “crack the code” of written language and are the keys to accessing a college- and career-ready education across subjects. But for a variety of reasons, many students aren’t getting this critical foundation. Is high-quality foundational skills instruction happening in your classroom, school, or system? How can you tell? In this webinar, we’ll use an updated version of the Foundational Skills Observation Tool to practice identifying the research-based elements of an excellent and equitable foundational skills experience for all students. Participants will watch and debrief classroom video and consider how the Foundational Skills Observation Tool can support continued teaching and learning around foundational skills.
